8:55: Now for the overall winner…Cambridge Community Services NHS Trust. An innovative, new, affordable hearing headset to help children with the most common cause of hearing loss: glue ear (also known as ‘Otitis Media with Effusion, OME’, where fluid/ mucus builds up behind the ear drum during the common cold or an ear infection). The innovative new headset can connect via Bluetooth to a microphone to help children hear at school or home. The headset can also connect via Bluetooth to a smart phone/ tablet to download an application (the Hear Glue Ear app) which aims to prevent children from developmental delays due to the hearing loss.

8:47: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust. Now We’re Talking for Healthy Minds. The Now We’re Talking campaign was launched in Oct 2018 to increase awareness and referrals into Worcestershire Healthy Minds, a service supporting people with more common mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. The campaign has had a huge impact – with self-referrals almost doubling.

8:47: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Lifebox Health. LifeBox Health has successfully created an online pre-assessment tool that is being used in both private and NHS hospitals. It enhances care through technology by reducing surgical risk via a standardised pre-assessment improving patient safety and encouraging their participation.

8:45: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Liopa. Patient/Carer communication aid based on AI-based Automated LipReading. Liopa, along with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Queens University Belfast, are developing SRAVI (Speech Recognition for Voice Impaired) , an easy-to-use, accurate and cost effective smartphone application for patient/carer communication. SRAVI will be used initially with tracheostomy patients who can move their lips normally but cannot speak.

The Walton Centre’s staff collaborated with Cynergy, to create the smartphone App called Shiny Mind, which supports them with tools to help during a stressful day. The app combines health and wellbeing training with positive messages which users can send to each other every day and access 24/7.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust’s (RCHT) strong partnership with Ingenica Solutions has enabled it to successfully meet and exceed the inventory management element of the Department of Health’s Scan4Safety programme; a unique partnership which has delivered exceptional results and sustainable, long-term change, replicable across the entire NHS.

On Call Managers: On-Call digital device, domain and OS agnostic application to support the On Call Managers and Directors in managing incidents and emergencies. There are many incidents and emergencies in a Mental Health setting, often out of hours and the on call management team need a digital, auditable tool to replace paper in support our frontline staff in managing incidents to ensure our patients safety and the delivery of healthcare.

8:05: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Women and Children’s Health. In March 2018 the Women and Children’s Division at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) launched Randomised Coffee Trials (RCTS). Over 80 people joined and we matched staff members at random across the division. The Feedback captured 2018 and 2019 was excellent and supports a happy and supportive culture. We wanted to get our staff in Women and Children’s services to know each other better, so we introduced Randomised Coffee Trials. RCTS are a simple yet powerful idea to create networks, breakdown silos, encourage collaboration, and can be a fantastic learning opportunity. Many organisations in the private, public and voluntary sector use RCTs and have had great results. In Women and Children’s health we too, had fantastic feedback.

Scheme to recruit and retain GPs in Newham delivered successfully! Work to improve health services for the people of London Borough of Newham by recruiting and retaining GPs and supporting practices. Over the last six- months 124 Newham GPs have been successfully supported in their roles.

Implementation of a full electronic patient record in Gateshead community mental health services; primary and secondary care working in partnership. Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust have digitised and standardised patient records in Community Mental Services. The EMIS system allows clinicians to access patient notes while working in the community. It was launched in partnership between the Trust, Community Mental Health Services and all 36 GP practices within the Gateshead area.

7:44: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The ‘invisible hand’ – PR in the NHS. Every year extensive efforts are made to plan, prepare and ultimately cope with the added pressures winter brings to the NHS. Yet this additional demand is increasingly a year round phenomenon (attendances in July 2018 exceeded those of January) and so a short term ‘sticking plaster’ approach no longer works.

7:43: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Art in Site Reducing Violence & Aggression through Interior Design & Art for Emergency Department, St Thomas’ Hospital. Violence and aggression directed towards staff poses a significant challenge to the NHS, with an estimated cost exceeding £69m a year – much of which is concentrated in Emergency depts.

The GP led ward was a new concept created following recognition that alternative workforce models needed creating to ensure the safe, effective running of additional beds opened during the winter period. Despite significant concerns being raised prior to the implementation of this ward it has been deemed a huge success.

#ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The Mass Clinic – concept and results of a new 18-week care model. The” Mass Clinic” has led to dramatic reductions in waiting-times and cost-savings. “One-stop-shop” consultant-led care, pre-assessment, surgery-scheduling, and physiotherapy reduces the need for further appointments and lowers patient-anxiety. By removing dependence on outsourcing, the trust gains financially. This New Care Model can easily be adapted to accommodate all hospital specialities.

7:34: #ForwardHealthcareAwards Finalist: Sheffield Health and Social Care. Implementation of a weekly music therapy session to help reduce boredom and aggression in a PICU ward. Collaborative project ran by The National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (NCCMH) and The Royal College of Psychiatrist and as such have been carrying out quality improvement projects aimed at identifying ways to improving mental health safety by reducing restrictive practice.

The development of a new cardiac assessment unit in the Emergency department at Russell’s Hall Hospital in Dudley. Working in collaboration with our ED, this unit has changed the way we manage this group of patients with chest pain, with a suspicion of low to intermediate risk of an acute coronary syndrome.
