With the integration of GDPR throughout the whole of the UK, the need for safer, encrypted data within the hospital is imperative for The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham (ROH). Matthew Maycock, IT Project and Infrastructure Manager, sought a secure, wall mounted charging cabinet to roll out throughout ROH. In a busy environment with multiple users and multiple devices, it was essential that compartments were always locked but allowed clinicians access to their devices quickly and easily.

In many hospitals, tablet computers are now an indispensable part of delivering excellent care. They may be used to record vital signs data, to identify when a patient’s condition is deteriorating and intervene promptly, or to access records. In such an environment, it is critical to ensure devices remain charged, so that clinicians can access information as and when they need it. But it’s equally important to ensure that devices are kept safe when not in use, with patient data hidden from sight and in no danger of being accessed maliciously.

At Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham, these are challenges that have been solved through the introduction of purpose-built storage units. There are now 10 Lyte Wall units from LapCabby installed throughout the hospital, ensuring devices remain fully charged and encrypted at all times. Each has a key pad entry locking system to enable staff to access devices quickly and easily, and extra air vents to ensure devices remain cool. This removes the need for a fan, which can present problems from an infection prevention and control perspective.
