New designs have been revealed for the East of England’s first-ever dedicated children’s hospital and have been presented to the Cambridge City Council’s planning committee.
The Cambridge Children’s Hospital is a partnership project between two NHS Trusts – Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT). The University of Cambridge is also involved in the project.
Project Director Alex White said: “This is an important next step towards developing the East of England’s first dedicated children’s hospital. These are early designs but it’s exciting to see our ‘whole child’ vision for integrated mental and physical health care at Cambridge Children’s Hospital taking shape.”
The new hospital site will be built on the current Cambridge Biomedical Campus and will care for residents from surrounding counties including Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Further genomic testing and research facilities will be built at the hospital as part of a wider approach to take care of the whole child, not just their illness.
Clinton Green, Director at Turner & Townsend and Design Team Project Director, said: “The team from Hawkins\Brown, White Arkitekter and MJ Medical consulted with young people, their families and staff through a series of workshops to ensure the design of the hospital has been inspired by them. From the layout of spaces inside to the artwork on the walls, their collective insights will ensure we deliver a whole healthcare environment not just for young people, but for all generations.”
Alongside the new designs being presented to the planning committee, the funding arm of the project has also been confirmed. The outline business case is an ongoing concern, which must be approved by HM Treasury before construction can begin.
Construction work is due to start in 2023 with the hospital hoped to be completed and opened in 2025.
