New Director of Nursing announced by RCN

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has appointed Susan Aitkenhead as its new Director of Nursing.

Susan has extensive experience in senior nursing roles, and most recently held the post of Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England. She was also one of Scotland’s first Consultant Nurses.

Susan said of her appointment: “Since joining the RCN I have been impressed by the commitment of members and staff in speaking up for our profession and providing much needed support and expertise during such challenging times. I am looking forward to building on this in my new role to ensure the nursing profession receives the recognition it deserves.”

Susan joined the RCN in January and has previously held the role of Director of Nursing for NHS England, where she was responsible for policy and system transformation.

Acting RCN General Secretary and Chief Executive, Pat Cullen said: “Susan brings a wealth of nursing and senior strategic leadership experience to this role, and we’re delighted to announce her appointment. It’s a crucial time for the College and Susan’s influencing skills will be so important as we continue forwards in our fight for fair pay and safe staffing levels.”

It’s been a busy time for the College recently, as we reported that the RCN had also announced a new president, backed new flexible working guidelines and launched an education strategy.
