Quarantined doctor continues to serve the public through Twitter

As myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the virus have started to build, medical experts are using social media to dispel and debunk.

Dr Yale Tung Chen was diagnosed with the virus in Madrid and subsequently quarantined.

As an emergency room doctor, Dr Chen took to Twitter to educate the public about the virus from a first-person perspective.

Education from isolation

Dr Chen is live tweeting the effects of Coronavirus infection daily.

From day 1 of his isolation, he has been tweeting ultrasound videos of his body and documenting his symptoms.

“Day 1 after #COVID diagnosis. Sore throat, headache (strong!), dry cough but not shortness of breath. No lung US abnormalities. Will keep a #POCUS track of my lungs.”

A commenter on Dr Chen’s Twitter feed described his as a “true investigator” in tracking the virus in his own body.

Despite him contracting the virus, Dr Chen described the hardest experience in being isolated from his family.

When talking to CNN, Dr Chen said “this is a message I want to send to all my doctor fellows; be careful. Anyone who is symptomatic should avoid contact or even work.”

Dr Chen also created a podcast broadcast through YouTube channel #EPICApodcast talking through his symptoms and ultrasound findings.

Some of Dr Chen’s advice includes when to stop home quarantine and call emergency services;

“COVID-19 patients isolated at home. Screening symptoms during home isolation: fever >39ºc lasting >2hours, chest tightness, shortness of breath, respiratory frequency >30times/min, dyspnea or aggravated diarrhea/vomiting. Stop home quarantine & call emergency.”
