RCGP announces new Vice-Chair

Dr Gary Howsam has been elected as the new Vice Chair-elect of the RCGP.

He will be responsible for External Affairs and will serve a three-year term from November 2019, succeeding Professor Martin Marshall who has been elected as the next Chair of Council.

The two other candidates in the election, independently conducted by UK Engage, were Mohammed Saqib Anwar and Joanne Reeve.

Dr Howsam studied Dentistry and then Medicine at Guy’s Hospital, University of London. He completed his General Practice training in Peterborough in 2008 and has worked in the area since then.

He is currently a part-time Partner at Octagon Medical Practice in Peterborough and is Clinical Chair of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group, a post he has held since July 2016.

He has been an active member of the East Anglia Faculty Board for a decade, currently serving as Vice-Chair and as the Faculty representative on College Council.

Dr Howsam said: “It is a great honour to be elected as Vice-Chair for External Affairs of the RCGP. This is a critical time for our profession and for patient care and I will do everything I can to make sure that the voice of frontline GPs is heard loud and clear as the College continues to build its influence, within the NHS and beyond.”

He will be one of three College Vice Chairs and will join Professor Mike Holmes, who has responsibility for Membership and International, and Dr Michael Mulholland, Vice Chair for Professional Development, on the College Officer team.
