RCN’s Deputy General Secretary elected to European committee

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has revealed that its Deputy General Secretary has been elected to the European Federation of Nurses (EFN) Executive Committee.

Susan Aitkenhead, whose full title is RCN Director of Nursing, Deputy General Secretary and Chief Executive, will take up her post at the EFN Executive Committee immediately, with her term set to run for two years and conclude in September 2023. 

Philomena Ní Sheaghdha, General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation was also elected to the Committee.

The EFN has been in existence since 1971 and represents 36 national nursing associations across Europe, with the RCN one its nine founding organisations.

The Committee considers and addresses important issues and challenges for nursing staff and aims to provide a voice for the profession.

In a statement about her new position, Susan said: “I’m delighted to have been elected to the EFN Executive Committee. It is a hugely important time for nursing and I’m looking forward to discussing and helping address some of the key issues that are being faced by all nursing staff, no matter where they practise.”
