The Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) is offering a course that will help develop the ‘clinical leaders and sustainability champions of the future’.
An NHS England and NHS Improvement-backed course, the Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellow Scheme is managed by FMLM, which has put out a fresh call for applicants to join the programme in 2022/23.
The course seeks to identify and support clinicians interested in green leadership roles. FMLM says the scheme will provide clinicians who have a ‘passion for sustainability’ with a ‘unique opportunity’ to develop leadership skills and have an impact on the green agenda.
Successful applicants will get to engage with senior leaders in the NHS to help embed net zero carbon principles within the healthcare system.
The chosen clinical fellows will step out of clinical practice for 12 months and lead on ‘key projects’ that could change how healthcare is ‘designed, developed and delivered’.
Selected fellows will gain: an understanding of sustainability principles, policy and applications; skills and education in leadership and management, policy development, project management, research and analysis, communications, and collaboration; supported personal development; the chance to contribute to national sustainability projects; access to professional networks; and ‘enhanced capabilities’ at developing and working with teams.
Dr Rebecca Taylor-Smith, Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellow 2021/22, says: “I have been able to bring my clinical background to the role, working on projects related to reducing the environmental impact of anaesthetics and theatres, as well as projects that relate to reducing the environmental impact of models of care.”
Allied health professionals (AHPs), doctors in training, nurses, public health specialist registrar trainees, pharmacists, healthcare scientists, dentist and midwives in the UK can all apply to the latest round of the scheme. The programme is specifically aimed at ‘aspiring future clinical leaders’ who have not yet held a senior leadership role.
